- A repair shop cannot give a true estimate over the telephone. They must see your car to determine the problem and the cost of repair.

- When a car will not start, check to see if the headlights will turn on to determine if the electrical system is receiving sufficient voltage. If not, the battery may need to be charged or replaced. Check the battery cables for corrosion.

- Many cars have an anti-theft device that does not allow the car to start if it has been disabled. To test this system, check to see if the security light flashes while the key is in the start position.

- If preventive maintenance is performed on a car, it can typically go over 100,000 miles without having major repairs needed.

- Timing belts must be replaced before they wear out and break as they can cause engine damage which would result in a large repair bill.

- Repair shops typically charge for the cost of parts and a flat hourly rate for labor. Before agreeing to have work performed, an estimate should be given for the full price on parts and labor.

- Ignoring the need for maintenance on an automobile can lead to more problems. Many parts interrelate and one part going bad can lead to the failure of other parts. Not changing the oil on a regular basis can lead to poor fuel economy as well as expensive repairs.

- Not having scheduled maintenance could lead to having a warranty invalidated.

- Check any puddles that collect under your car immediately. A yellowish green, pastel blue or florescent orange color is an indication of an overheated engine or a leak in the antifreeze. Dark brown or black oil means the engine is leaking oil which could be caused by a bad seal or gasket. Red oil indicates a leaking of the transmission fluid. Clear water is generally not a problem.
