6 Must Know Signs of Transmission Trouble

6 Must Know Signs of Transmission TroubleWhether you drive a manual transmission, automatic transmission or semi-automatic transmission vehicle, it is imperative that you provide your car or SUV with proper maintenance if you don't want it to give you any problems. Transmission issues can result in your car shifting erratically, falling out of gear, or even being unable to get into gear, which means you can't drive it at all. If you ever encounter any of the following six signs of transmission trouble, or something else, be sure to reach out to a mechanic as soon as possible to prevent the problem from growing worse.

Grinding Gear Noises

Oftentimes, the first sign of trouble that people will run into if their car's transmission is having operating issues is a grinding noise that occurs while shifting. This is often characteristic of a transmission that is running low on transmission fluid. Get to a shop right away to prevent unnecessary wear of the gears.

Delayed Shifting

If you drive an automatic transmission vehicle that seems to have its RPMs spike while the transmission shifts then you will want to visit the auto shop. This also indicates that the vehicle is operating on low levels of transmission fluid, but it could also be related to a computer error.

Pops out of Gear

A very dangerous symptom of transmission trouble in a manual transmission car is if the transmission suddenly pops into neutral while driving. This prevents you from being able to properly control your vehicle, which could result in an accident. Don't hesitate to visit the shop to have this issue resolved.

Burning Smell

Anytime you notice an odd smell in your car it is a good idea to have it checked out. If you note a burning smell while shifting through the gears it may mean that it is time for clutch repair or that the transmission is overheating.

Whining Noises

Whining noises may mean that the needle bearings in the torque converter of your automatic transmission need service.

Transmission Fluid Leak

An obvious sign of transmission trouble is a visible leak. Transmission fluid is generally a reddish color and will leak directly beneath the transmission. Low transmission fluid levels can result in all sorts of trouble for your vehicle, including much of the above.
